Do you mind if I ask, what is the appeal? Are garden gnomes friendly? Comforting? Protective? I had a friend who had them in his yard and we would play croquet back there. It always seemed to me his mom’s gnomes were mocking me with sinister little laughs. I have always regarded them as tricksters until now when you said Elfie is your muse and gatekeeper for your writing. I hadn’t thought of them in that way before and always wondered why people keep them when they are so unsettling. Does Elfie give you confidence for your bold and daring work? If so, maybe I should get an 18th century muse for myself. I’d never be able to find a gnome, though, that wouldn’t distract me. It would have to be something else, I think, unless you can convince me with gnome lore or your own personal experience. Although, it just occurred to me that a satirist would certainly need a muse that is a little sinister and enjoys mockery.
